オーストラリア キャンベラ（Canberra）周辺はドローン宅配技術が試験運用されている最先端の地域ですが、『ものごとには進歩的であるほどに課題も生じてくるもの』と問題が持ち上がっています。

試験運用に用いられた宅配ドローンには緊急時に作動する予備分を含め12個のモーターが装備されており、その騒音を不安・迷惑に思う人たちがいることがわかってきたのです。

地域住民の中には試験運用に自ら参加した人もいますが、そうでない人たちもおり、小包が参加者たちの裏庭に届けられる度に、不安に思う人たちがいたということになります。

住民が飼っていた馬が宅配ドローンの騒音に驚いてしまったという話もあり、開発者はこういった課題にも対処し、地域住民により深く配慮する必要があります。

事態を受け、キャンベラ空港とドローンのテスト区域であるファンリーパーク（Fernleigh Park）の住民は、試験運用計画について懸念を表明しました。

空港付近で宅配ドローンが飛行してしまう安全上の問題など、キャンベラ空港側の懸念事項は企業側との交渉である程度解消されたようですが、こういった議論が試験運用前に行われなかったことには驚きを隠せません。

ゆくゆくは宅配サービスの提供をキャンベラ市まで広げる見通しということで、住民の生活が害される前に、騒音問題などにはある程度の解決の目処が要求されることでしょう。

Safety concerns surrounding drone delivery trial need to be addressed

The Canberra region is now on the forefront of drone delivery technology but with that advancement comes real and valid concerns that need to be addressed.

The speed at which technology continues to progress is unrivalled by the laws that govern its use. In this case it’s particularly concerning given the drone testing site’s proximity to the Canberra Airport. While it falls outside controlled airspace, it isn’t by much.

Both the Canberra Airport and residents of Fernleigh Park, where the drone testing is taking place, have expressed concerns this week in regards to the plans.

While the Canberra Airport’s concerns seem to have been somewhat alleviated through discussions with the company, it’s astounding these discussions did not take place before the testing began.

As for residents, while some have signed up to be guinea pigs in this trial, with parcels being delivered to their backyards, others have found it disruptive and unsafe.

Animal welfare is also a concern, with one couple stating that their horses were spooked by the drone flying nearby. Given the noise this technology makes it’s not hard to see why.

The drone has 12 hover motors, but not all operate at the same time. There are backups which can kick in the case of emergency.

Residents of Fernleigh Park no doubt moved to the rural area for peace, quiet and privacy.

How’s the serenity with a drone flying over your property? Apparently it’s not very nice.

The proponents of this technology need to address these issues. Greater consideration needs to be given to residents of the area, and those of surrounding areas that might be affected.

The company has also stated they wish to expand to Canberra. Let’s hope they can at least address the noise issues before they disrupt a large portion of the residential population.
